Bob Odenkirk Reveals His Biggest Acting Challenge in Better Call Saul

Bob Odenkirk reveals what he found to be his biggest acting challenge while he was filming the hit Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul.

Bob Odenkirk has been opening up about the challenges that came from playing Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. A series centering around Walter White’s sleazy criminal lawyer, Better Call Saul explores the other side of running a drug empire. With Jimmy McGill building himself up to be the monstrous Saul, he grows darker with every early episode.

Better Call Saul takes some big risks, including the fact that its protagonist is little more than a careless criminal in a suit. That, in some ways, was the most challenging part of the show. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Odenkirk opened up about how Saul’s general outlook and personality made acting in Better Call Saul so difficult. Check out his quote below:

Will Saul Goodman Ever Appear Again?
The ending of Better Call Saul sees White’s lawyer finally coming to terms with his own identity. Rejecting Saul and Gene Takavic, he manages to restore his identity as Jimmy McGill and permanently retain it. Of course, for Jimmy, the Better Call Saul ending also means spending a lifetime behind bars. Yet there is still potential for Goodman to appear again. Should the universe ever expand with new shows, he can star in episodes set before his prison sentence, just as Walter White appeared in Better Call Saul. Episodes set in the future can also feature visits to jail, where McGill can show off how much he’s changed through the years.

Unfortunately, with show creator Vince Gilligan busy with other projects, it’s unlikely that the Breaking Bad universe returns anytime soon. Should more Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul spin-offs ever be developed, they will likely come after a long break, so Gilligan can stretch his legs with new shows. While it would be difficult to top Odenkirk’s Better Call Saul, there are still some routes to continuing the series that deserve to be explored.
