The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Needs A Big Death (& It’s Not June)

The Handmaid’s Tale is finally coming to a close, and season 6 needs a big deal – but not June. Hulu’s acclaimed series will be ending with season 6, wrapping up the events of June’s tragic Gilead story. While the series is dark and sombre, The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 probably won’t end with June dying. However, there is another The Handmaid’s Tale character that would be perfect for a big season 6 death.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale explores the fascist theocracy of Gilead, a far-right ultra-religious state that took over the United States of America. The Handmaid’s Tale mostly followed June escaping Gilead, with the narrative switching to center her anti-Gileadean actions after she escaped to Canada. The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 ended on a pretty sad note, with June and the other refugees having to flee the country of Canada due to a rise in the popularity of Gilead. On top of that, the ending also sets up The Handmaid’s Tale season 6’s biggest death.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Means Luke Has To Die In Season 6
At the end of The Handmaid’s Tale season 5, Luke and June are split up once again, with Luke being arrested by Canadian authorities. Luke had previously killed a Canadian that assaulted June, with Luke deciding to give himself up to the police so that June and Nichole could escape Canada uninterrupted. While many viewers expect June and Luke to reunite one final time in The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, it seems more likely that Luke will die.

Out of all the potential deaths in The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, Luke’s seems the most likely. June and Luke have been split up several times throughout The Handmaid’s Tale, with each instance seeming more hopeless than the last. However, June and Luke have always managed to find each other, something that shouldn’t happen in season 6. Having Luke make it out alive again would make it seem like he was wearing plot armor, as no other group of characters in The Handmaid’s Tale has been half as lucky as June and Luke.

June Can’t Die In Season 6 Because Of The Testaments

Although June seems like the most likely candidate to die in The Handmaid’s Tale, she can’t because of the book’s sequel, The Testaments. June actually reappears in The Testaments, with her having reunited with her daughters at the very end of the book. Hulu has already announced that they will be adapting The Testaments, meaning that June will probably return similar to how she did in the book.

Luke also appears in The Testaments, but his role is significantly smaller than June’s. While June needs to reappear in The Testaments for the story to work, Luke doesn’t have to, meaning he can be killed off in season 6 without majorly affecting the spin-off series. It won’t be known who dies until The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, but Luke seems like a great choice compared to the others.
