For actor Eugene Levy, one big perk that came with starring on Schitt’s Creek was that it became the role he’s most known for with fans. For many years, Levy was best known for American Pie, as he was specifically involved with that awkward scene that inspired the name of the film. Anyone who’s seen the film wouldn’t be able to forget it, but for those who haven’t, it involved Levy’s character walking in on his son (Jason Biggs) pleasuring himself with a fresh apple pie.
In a new interview with The Guardian, Levy says how the role he gets recognized for the most these days is Schitt’s Creek. He goes on to explain how happy he is to have this take the spot of American Pie, as he recalls how “tedious” it grew to become when people would literally give him apple pie after recognizing him from his role in the 1999 comedy. From the interview: “Now it’s Schitt’s Creek. All over the world. People came up and talked about the show in pretty much any location we visited. The American Pie thing got a bit tedious. People would bring me apple pie every time I went into a restaurant or to a wedding. Which is kind of funny, but it did happen a lot.”
Eugene Levy Stuck Around in His American Pie Role
Perhaps another reason American Pie would follow Levy around for so long is that he continued to appear in nearly every other film in the franchise. Of course, that includes the direct sequels to the original film: 2001’s American Pie 2, 2003’s American Wedding, and 2012’s American Reunion. He would reprise his role for four American Pie Presents spinoffs: 2005’s Band Camp, 2006’s The Naked Mile, 2007’s Beta House, and 2009’s The Book of Love. He did not appear in 2020’s Girls’ Rules, which arrived as Levy was wrapping up his run on Schitt’s Creek.
Levy’s clearly happy to be recognized for his role on Schitt’s Creek, though perhaps he isn’t finished with the American Pie franchise. There have been rumors of another American Pie sequel happening with the original cast, so it’s possible we’ll see Levy back in that role once again one day. For now, fans can see him traveling the world in the documentary series The Reluctant Traveler on Apple TV+. The series follows Levy as he explores various locations including Costa Rica, Finland, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Maldives, and South Africa.
