Twilight Star Taylor Lautner Almost Lost His Jacob Role to Tyler Posey

It’s been almost 15 years since Twilight premiered, and it’s pretty hard to picture anyone other than Taylor Lautner playing werewolf Jacob Black. But the role almost went to another actor: none other than Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey.

Tyler recently stopped by The Kelly Clarkson Show to chat about Paramount+’s upcoming Teen Wolf: The Movie and took the chance to spill the beans about his almost-casting on the film adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s hugely popular book saga.

Speaking to Kelly, Tyler revealed he was in the running to land the role of Jacob when casting for the first Twilight film was underway. “I was up against Taylor Lautner; it was between he and I,” the now 31-year-old star revealed. “It would have been huge, but I was really young,” Tyler continued. “I was like 16. I wasn’t ready for that type of attention that he got. So I had to wait a couple more years.”

In the end, it all worked out — Tyler finally got to live out his lycanthrope dreams when Teen Wolf premiered on MTV in 2011, three years after the first Twilight film hit cinemas in 2008. Taylor Lautner joined Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in the main cast. “[Taylor] got a lot [of attention] at that age, and I commend him for it, but I don’t know if I was fully ready for it, which I owe [to my] not getting it, you know?” Tyler went on to say.

Taylor Lautner himself had previously opened up about the pressure he felt after being jet-propelled into stardom when Twilight debuted, and his ensuing fame. In 2022, he admitted to having suffered from anxiety while portraying Jacob across the saga’s five films, though he later grew to view his experiences as a learning curve. “I went so many years either not leaving my house or if I did, I had sunglasses… I didn’t know it but I was scared to go out. I’d get super anxious to go out so I just didn’t,” Taylor said at the time. Thankfully, Taylor can say that he feels “so much better” now and finally feels comfortable re-entering the limelight and the public eye.
