Jensen Ackles Upholds Tradition By Celebrating Dean Winchester’s Birthday With New Post

Jensen Ackles continues the yearly tradition of celebrating his Supernatural character Dean Winchester’s birthday, with a funny new post.

Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has honored his yearly tradition of wishing Dead Winchester a happy birthday on January 24. Ackles starred as Dean Winchester for all of Supernatural’s long-running 15 seasons. The series followed Dean and his brother Sam (Jared Padalecki) as they searched for their father John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who disappeared on a hunting trip. The catch was that the Winchesters were actually monster hunters, who would go up against a series of evil beings along the show’s run, including Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) himself.

Ackles shared on Instagram a cheeky post to celebrate Dean’s birthday. The humor from Ackles’ message can be found in the location where he filmed the video — in front of a cemetery.

The Supernatural series finale included Dean’s death, which was a momentous event filled with controversy. Audiences were both moved by Dean’s speech to Sam as the character dies, but at the same time, the way the death of the character was handled did not feel worthy of his long journey on the show — with Dean dying on what seemed like an easy hunt in any other episode of Supernatural. Ackles choosing to stop right in front of a cemetery before wishing Dean a happy birthday to the camera is a cheeky joke about his character’s death.

How Supernatural Lives On

Supernatural might have concluded in 2021 after an incredible 15-season run and more than 300 episodes, but the show’s universe is not over yet. Ackles himself spearheads Supernatural spinoff series The Winchesters, which the actor executive produces alongside his wife Danneel Ackles. The spinoff focuses on Sam and Dean’s parents, John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly), at an earlier point in the characters’ lives, including the moment they first met and how the duo fell in love.

Ackles returns as Dean Winchester for the series in a physical appearance during The Winchesters’ pilot episode, as well as serving as the series narrator. There is currently no news regarding Dean possibly interacting with one or both of his parents throughout The Winchesters season 1. Dean’s narrator role in The Winchesters, and Ackles’ deep involvement with the spinoff beg the question of the actor deciding to have a more active return to acting as Dean Winchester in the future, perhaps in a Supernatural revival.

Can A Supernatural Revival Happen In The Future?

Ackles’ behind-the-scenes job of coming up with the story for The Winchesters and championing the spinoff through his production company Chaos Machine shows that one of the two actors behind Supernatural’s main characters is committed to staying with the show’s universe. In the past, roughly one year after Supernatural ended, Ackles interestingly said in an interview that he had a dream where him and co-star Padalecki “tackle one more case as Sam and Dean… a nice 10-episode short-order for HBO Max.” The actor’s plan for the universe seems to only be starting with The Winchesters, and should he convince Padalecki to return, a Supernatural revival series could be the next step.
