Ewan McGregor Still Hopeful For Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2

As Disney+ continues to branch out its small-screen projects, Ewan McGregor remains hopeful for an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2. The 2022 series marked McGregor’s first Star Wars franchise return since Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, picking up 10 years after the film and finding the eponymous Jedi Master hiding out on Tatooine to watch over a young Luke Skywalker, only to be pulled away from the planet when Leia Organa is kidnapped by overzealous Galactic Empire Inquisitor Reva in the hopes of drawing him out. While its pacing was met with some mixed reviews, Obi-Wan Kenobi ultimately proved to be a hit for Disney+, leaving many eager to see McGregor return for a new season, and audiences aren’t the only ones keen for more.

In a recent interview with Disney Studio Awards to discuss the show’s awards season chances, Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen reflected on their Star Wars returns in Obi-Wan Kenobi. When asked about the possibility of a season 2, McGregor reaffirmed his interest to come back once again for a new story, fondly remembering his time on season 1 of the Disney+ series. See what McGregor said below:

I was so happy to do it again, and so happy to work with Hayden again, and I hope we get the chance to do it again. In the old days, I would joke about, ‘There must be a good story to tell between ‘Episode III’ and ‘VI’.’ But, it’s true. I always felt that there was. I feel like Deborah Chow found it and absolutely nailed it. Like just found the story that we wanted to see between the last one that we did and first that was done in [1977]… And I think it just adds to our knowledge of the characters, and it’s satisfying… for the fans.

This isn’t the first time McGregor has expressed interest in a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, with the actor having even teased shortly after season 1’s finale that Disney and Lucasfilm were interested in continuing the story set in motion. Series writer Stuart Beattie has also expressed confidence in the possibility of a renewal for the Star Wars show, feeling there is plenty of ground to cover in Obi-Wan’s time between season 1 and his eventual appearance in Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope, where he would sacrifice himself to allow Luke, Han, Leia and the other heroes to escape Darth Vader. Lucasfilm executive Kathleen Kennedy seemed similarly open to the idea bout a possible Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, noting that while it was developed as a limited series, a successful run could see the studio discuss expanding the story further.

On the flip side, however, composer Natalie Holt indicated there being some doubt about a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, noting that while she’d love to return, director Deborah Chow indicated the show already told a “completed story.” Given it ultimately garnered far more favorable reviews than fellow Disney+ Star Wars series, The Book of Boba Fett, and surpassed records set by the Temuera Morrison-led show and The Mandalorian, the title that got the ball rolling for Lucasfilm’s franchise on the streaming platform, it would seem interest remains in not only the character, but McGregor’s incarnation of him. However, with half a year already gone since Obi-Wan Kenobi’s finale and a clear focus being put on The Mandalorian season 3, Andor season 2 and new shows Ahsoka, The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew, bringing McGregor’s series back may not be a priority for the studio.

While touted as a limited series, Obi-Wan Kenobi left a number of story paths open to explore in a potential season 2, namely his training with the Force ghost of Qui-Gon Jinn for unknown new abilities. Additionally, with Reva freed of her Dark Side influence thanks to her interactions with Obi-Wan, the door is open for him to help train her in the ways of the Light Side and attain a better future, potentially including appearances in fellow Disney+ shows The Mandalorian, Andor or Ahsoka. As audiences await word on their potential futures, they can revisit McGregor’s Star Wars return with Obi-Wan Kenobi streaming on Disney+ now.
