Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein gave journalists a few tantalizing teases about the state of Ted Lasso Season 3 during the panel for their new Apple TV+ show, Shrinking, at Winter 2023 TCA. Co-creator and executive producer Lawrence revealed that he’s seen cuts of Ted Lasso Season 3 and said it’s “fucking awesome.” He also revealed that Jason Sudeikis took the lead of the Ted Lasso Season 3 writers’ room and “crushed it.” Goldstein, who both writes for the show and has won two Emmys for playing Roy Kent, added, “I love it.”
Since Apple TV+ launched in 2019, the streamer’s hands-down breakout hit has been Ted Lasso. The series was co-created and developed by Jason Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly. Fans expected Ted Lasso Season 3 to premiere in Summer 2022, but the celebrated show’s return has been delayed. In the interim between Seasons 2 and 3, Lawrence has co-created a new Apple TV+ comedy with Brett Goldstein: Shrinking.
“Jason Sudeikis ran Ted Lasso this year and crushed it,” Lawrence said. “Brett had to stay there and act and be a writer on that show. I got to — because that production was up and running, because of all the support from Apple — come here and move back to my family and home and do Shrinking.”
“[Shrinking EP] Neil [Goldman] and I have worked together for a hundred years and our safety net was we were able to call Brett in London and talk him through outlines we’d come up with. So he was able to write a couple episodes.”
