Shawn Mendes released his heartfelt ballad Itll Be Okay just two weeks after his public split with Camila Cabello but he took his time curating a moody and melancholic music video. The Wonder singer took to Instagram on January 12 to announce that the video was being released the following day.
Shot in his hometown of Toronto Canada the video starts with Shawn sitting on a bench as snow falls behind him and he fidgets with a ring on his middle finger. Throughout the duration of the video he walks through Toronto with the citys skyline and glistening winter snow as his backdrop. Its a beautiful scene for the song which includes lyrics that release the similarly chilling emotions that come with heartbreak.
In a live stream ahead of the music videos world premiere Shawn shared some details about the song. Im excited for you to see this video I think its beautiful. I think you guys are gonna love it he told fans. For Itll Be Okay Shawn joined forces with director Jay Martin who also directed the music videos for his hits like Mercy Stitches and In My Blood. The video was extremely cold to film he continued. We were in the city of Toronto and it was night time and it was freezing.
There was lots of fake snow going in my mouth. But other than that it was pretty nice. He went on to say that he enjoyed being able to shoot a video that features the skyline of the city that he lives in for the first time. Of course fans wanted to know about his personal favorite lyric in Itll Be Okay and the 23yearold star del My favorite line in the song is I start to imagine a world where we dont collide. I like the word collide I like the image of two people not just meeting in life but two people — boom — in life he dished mimicking the sound of an explosion at the end.
Following the videos premiere Shawn shared an exclusive behindthescenes look on Instagram where he dished all about the inspiration behind the song and how the video came to fruition. The BTS video was also shared in joint with Instagrams official profile. In the behindthescenes video Jay Martin admitted that old photographs of James Dean were a major influence for Shawns look in Itll Be Okay.
I was just really craving to make music that felt super honest and super raw and was going through some hard stuff at the time. Being able to just walk around Toronto — which is where I usually go back to process things and where youll find me in my most intimate moments — it feels like a perfect place and video for the song said Shawn of his hometown setting.
I think ultimately like being vulnerable and being open in the moment feels extremely hard and frustrating and annoying he continued. But a lot of the time that pays off and every time you have the courage to be vulnerable you give others the courage to show up and be true. Thats a really really powerful thing.
