Criminal Minds boss talks big change for season 16

Criminal Minds executive producer Erica Messer has opened up about being able to swear more in the show following its move to Paramount. The police procedural originally ran on CBS for 15 seasons before being revived on Paramount for its 16th outing which premiered last night November 24. Speaking about moving to a streamer Messer touched upon the fact that there were a few more shits added to the dialogue with their newfound freedom.

That was the one thing that never rang true to me she told Deadline. I have a family full of law enforcement and they need more than damn a lot of times. I was really happy we could drop some of those. But at the same time I didnt want it to all of a sudden sound like an HBO show. I know that a lot of families watch this show and I didnt want it to suddenly not sound familiar. The producer also explained that they were able to show more violence revealing that we might stay in a frame a little longer than we used to though she is a big believer in letting your imagination fill in the blanks.

I dont like to show a whole ton of stuff she continued.
And then just the fact that we can be with one of the killers for so long get to know him and show the complicated dynamics of his relationships at home. Weve never really gotten that kind of insight into a killer before.

The show boss also explained how they are able to live in the space a little bit longer with episode lengths elaborating You get to be in the creepy moments longer and be in the emotion longer than you would on broadcast. I feel like our directors cuts are really getting to live in a way that they couldnt before because we couldnt air all 53 minutes. Its been a really fun thing but we didnt change the structure of the show.
