The first season of 13 Reasons Why aired five years ago and quickly became one of the most controversial shows on the Netflix platform. Throughout the first season, fans followed the journey of the main character Hannah Baker, who revealed her struggles via pre-recorded tapes in each episode. Each tape was dubbed as a ‘reason’ why she chose to end her life. However, as the show went on, fans developed mixed views. Whilst being loved by many, others found the show harder to watch, with some finding certain scenes triggering. One scene which showed Hannah taking her own life was even removed by Netflix as it was deemed to be not appropriate. Some found the scene too intense, whilst others argued it carried a powerful message and was helping to spread awareness. However, despite the controversy, the show ran for a full four seasons, with the main character Hannah Baker only appearing in two of them.

Since starring as Hannah Baker on 13 Reasons Why, Katherine Langford has gone on to earn a small fortune with the Netflix series plus other roles.

Much of her net worth has been amassed through her acting roles, with her role as Hannah Baker in 13 Reasons Why opening up a cascade of opportunities for the young Australian actress. During her time spent on the show, Katherine reportedly earned $80,000 per episode. This means for the first season alone, the actress earned just over a million dollars — not too shabby. Since starring in the show, a whole new avenue of opportunities opened up for Katherine. She has managed to land many high-profile roles thanks to her newfound success and fortune, including a role in a 2018 movie called Love, Simon, where she played the character of Leah. Undoubtedly the star was paid a large salary for the role. Just a year later she also starred in Knives Out, playing the role of Meg, as well as starring in the Netflix drama, Cursed. She has also done some voice acting for an animated series called Robot Chicken. Looking at her history of highly successful acting roles, it is certain that the actress will continue to amass an even higher net worth whilst building up her career. However, why did the 26-year-old actress leave the show? In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Katherine explained her reason for leaving 13 Reasons Why. She explained that she was ‘extremely grateful’ and that she left the role due to the fact she feels she has ‘grown a lot more as a person’ since the show ‘and hopefully more as an actor, and that’s something that I hope I can continue to do’ In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she opened up a little more, explaining how she found the second season difficult to film. She stated, “It definitely felt like time. For me, letting Hannah go was in season one, season two was for Clay to let her go. It was being able to assist Clay on that journey.”

In addition, she also suggested that it was ultimately the showrunner’s decision as well as the other factors involved. There were many intense scenes in all the seasons, which may indicate why Katherine maybe found filming difficult at times. Katherine also went on to explain that ‘it also feels nice to have had that breathing room’ and ‘having the space to do a couple of other roles before stepping into another huge commitment like this series. So overall, it seems as though the star had probably known for a while what her next move was going to be, rather than it being a spontaneous and unexpected decision. For the finale of the show, the actress also explained that she was still filming for Cursed, so she was unable to film anything for 13 Reasons Why at the time.
