During the 2022 American Music Awards, American Idol showcased three Hollywood hopefuls competing for a platinum ticket. Their performances for judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie served as a public plea for the acclaimed platinum power. Throughout the broadcast, America had the opportunity to vote for one lucky recipient
Unlike the infamous golden ticket from the start of the series, the American Idol platinum ticket was introduced during American Idol season 20. The recipient of the ticket gets to fast-forward through the first round of Hollywood week, which is notoriously the most grueling leg of the American Idol competition. During the American Music Awards, three contenders performed to see who would get this sought-after ticket.

American Idol’s First Performance of The Night
First, Matt Wilson took the stage with his soulful rendition of “For Tonight” by Giveon. Matt’s sound is very familiar to popular singer Kahlid and R&B artist SoMo. As the first performer of the night, Matt runs the opportunity of skipping through Hollywood Week. The singer, who is from Buffalo, New York, couldn’t wait to share the news on his Instagram, writing, “So INCREDIBLY honored man […] words can’t explain!”
The Fresh (& Young) Faces Of American Idol Season 21
Pop singer and songwriter Haven Madison, a high school student, is not unfamiliar with the entertainment industry, so American Idol season 21 is the perfect fit. Zipping from coast to coast, the teenage performer was raised in a tour bus from the age of two. Armed with an up-close-and-personal take on stardom, Haven sprouted her musical roots from the side-stage, ultimately releasing her debut EP, “All The Things I Didn’t Say,” in February 2022. She performed “Arcade” by Duncan Lawrence for the American Idol judges in hopes of securing her own pathway to Hollywood. Her tone is compared to that of Taylor Swift and British singer/songwriter Birdy.
American Idol Season 21’s Golden Child
Nashville’s Elijah McCormick wowed the audience with his performance of “God Bless The Broken Road” by Rascal Flats. Both his performance and backstory pulled at their heartstrings. In 2019, the high school graduate was involved in a traumatic, near-death car accident. Just 18 years old at the time, Elijah, who sang for American Idol like Huntergirl, was severely injured in a head-on collision. According to The Pilot, he was transported by airlift to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s treatment facilities. Since his personal IDs were lost at the site of the accident, the then-John Doe was coined the “Golden Child” by hospital staff because of his bleach-blonde tips.
After 79 days of treatment involving dialysis, the installation of a tracheal tube, multiple cardiac arrests, and ten surgeries, Elijah was back on his feet. Using song as medicine, his wide vocal range is compared to John Legend and American Idol season 2 winner Ruben Studdard. Elijah currently attends Sandhills Community College and aims for America’s support in securing the American Idol platinum ticket like Jay Copeland.
Fans can watch the performances of Matt, Haven, and Elijah and vote for their favorite performance on the ABC website. The vote closes on Monday, November 21, at 11 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT so fans should get their votes in as soon as possible. Whoever receives the platinum ticket deserves to compete in the American Idol competition.
