In terms of things that don’t feel like they exist in the same universe, Tom Cruise and the long-running BBC drama Call the Midwife could not be more separate. But apparently, their worlds are converging with the help, or hindrance, actually, of Cruise’s helicopter.
Jenny Agutter, who’s played Sister Julienne in the show since 2012, says that filming for the latest series has been interrupted multiple times due to Cruise helicoptering in and out of Longcross studios in Surrey. “Tom Cruise keeps on ruining our filming by landing his helicopter right outside where we’re shooting”, she revealed in an interview with The Mirror. He’s currently filming the eighth instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, on the same lot as Call the Midwife. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is set to be Cruise’s penultimate outing as IMF agent Ethan Hunt and will see Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Vanessa Kirby reprise their roles in the franchise. It has already been filmed and is set to hit our screens next year.
Agutter says the cast has had to reshoot scenes they’ve been filming after the whirring of his chopper disrupted takes. She then joked that she might have to take matters into her own hands if the ruckus keeps up. “In my habit! Imagine. ‘Excuse me Tom, but look we’re trying to film. I don’t know about you, but just get your helicopter out of here quickly’!’”.
It’s not the first time an aircraft and this next Mission: Impossible film have hit headlines together. Back in September, in a video message as part of Cinemacon, Cruise casually addressed the crowd from inside a plane in the air. Nonchalantly standing and leaning against the wing, he’s interrupted by director Chris McQuarrie in another plane telling him they need to roll on another scene.
But considering Call the Midwife is one of the most beloved shows on the BBC, especially around the festive season, Cruise may want to consider landing his helicopter a bit further afield lest the British public comes after him with their turkey knives.
