James Bond Producer Gives Disappointing Update On Craig’s Replacement

James Bond franchise producer, Barbara Broccoli, give a disappointing update regarding Daniel Craig’s replacement as the titular character. Originally created in 1953 by British author Ian Fleming, James Bond thrilled audiences all over the world in his first feature film, Dr. No, in 1962. Starring Sean Connery as MI6’s agent 007, the character would eventually be portrayed by six actors in 25 films over the course of 60 years.

The latest entry in the multi-generation action-adventure franchise, No Time to Die, proved to the last for Craig who starred in the role for a total of five films in 15 years. The thrilling finale concluded with Bond sacrificing himself and leaving a daughter behind. Broccoli and co-producer, Michael G. Wilson, have stated that the future Bond will need to be a reinvention of the character and must commit to the role for an extended period of time.

EW caught up with Broccoli, who has a disappointing update regarding Craig’s replacement as James Bond. Although the producer previously stated that they will begin their search this year, Broccoli explains that she still needs to discuss the future of the film series. Now she claims that the search for a new Bond will begin in 2023. Read what Broccoli said below “We haven’t begun the hunt. We’re going to be sort of sitting down and trying to figure out where the Bond series is going to go, and we need to do that first, to get a sense of that, before we start casting for the role. So we’ll start thinking about that sometime next year.”

Who Are The Best Options To Play Bond?

The delay to star the search for Craig’s replacement as 007 will surely be disappointing to long time fans of the film series. However, a break may be good for the franchise as it will give audiences a time to reflect on what Craig brought to the character as well as giving Broccoli and Wilson time recharge instead of rushing into the next installment. However, instead of rebooting the franchise immediately, there has been speculation regarding the continuation of the Craig-saga through spinoff films possibly starring No Time to Die’s new 007 agent Nomi, played by The Woman King’s Lashana Lynch, or rookie, yet incredibly-skilled, CIA agent Paloma played by Blonde’s Ana de Armas.

As the Bond producers previously stated, a reinvention of the character is likely need for the franchise to feel fresh. A new young actor, who is able to commit to such a weighted role full is required to meet the expectations of the expansive film series. Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Tom Holland and Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden have been entertained by fans as prospective choices to take up the mantle as the next 007. Avengers: Endgame directors have publicly backed Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page after casting him in their latest film, The Gray Man, citing his charisma. With the next film in the franchise likely years away, fans can only speculate and debate as to which star will come out ahead in the running as the next James Bond.
