Fox eats a very healthy diet, and avoids processed carbohydrates. “I cut out all bread and those sort of carbohydrates. No crackers, no pretzels, no chips. Nothing unhealthy,” she says. “The worst thing I put in my body is coffee, once a day. I don’t have any cheat days. But if I did, it would be pizza or cake.”
Almonds are one of Fox’s go-to foods for snacks and as part of meals. “Almonds are rich in nutrients that help protect the heart, including unsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols, magnesium, vitamin E, copper and manganese,” says registered nutritionist Nicola Shubrook. “Two research studies in 2012 and 2014 found that including almonds in your diet may reduce the risk of heart disease, specifically in overweight individuals. Further research has shown that almond consumption helps to reduce LDL cholesterol which may, in turn, help to reduce the risk of heart disease.” Fox exercises “really hard”, and incorporates weights, cardio, and circuit training into her workout routine. “Try getting in a 30-minute workout five or more days a week that raises your heart rate for the duration of the activity,” says clinical exercise physiologist Erik Van Iterson, PhD, MS. “Or try three, 10-minute workouts, five or more days a week.”
Fox loves Japanese food, widely considered one of the healthiest cuisines on the planet. “A study by the British Medical Journal found that those who stuck closer to the Japanese dietary guidelines – a diet high in grains and vegetables, with moderate amounts of animal products and soy but minimal dairy and fruit – had a reduced risk of dying early from heart disease or stroke,” says Shubrook. “As their diet is traditionally high in soy and fish this may also play a significant role in reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
