The Witcher’s Renewal Is Bad News for Henry Cavill Superman Fans

The Witcher fans are happy with Netflix renewing the series for Seasons 4 and 5, but it’s bad for people wanting Henry Cavill to return as Superman.

Ten years ago, Henry Cavill suited up as the biggest superhero in history for 2013’s Man of Steel. His tenure as Superman didn’t quite work out, but then the gaming-obsessed actor landed another distinctive role as Geralt of Rivia. While Netflix renewing The Witcher for not one but two seasons is good for Cavill, it’s bad news for fans who are still hoping to see him as Superman again.

For years, there have been reports of talks and negotiations to bring Cavill in as Superman for movies like Shazam! (which ultimately didn’t happen) to being a roaming actor across the DC Extended Universe  which probably wasn’t true . Cavill said in a 2022 interview on Lorraine that he still had his Superman outfit and was “ready and waiting for the phone call.” Yet if he’s going to be tied up filming two seasons of The Witcher back to back, his window of availability is narrow.

That doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Cavill could work out deals for both DC films and The Witcher if Warner Bros. Discovery does want him back. If The Witcher Seasons 4 and 5 are going to film consecutively, they’ll also be written consecutively   giving Cavill a few months or possibly a year before shooting begins. However once filming does start, Cavill will likely be wrapped up with his “main” franchise for more than year. Season 3 wrapped filming only recently, and it was the shortest shoot  but it still took almost six months! Even if the series keeps up that pace, it would take a full year to complete Seasons 4 and 5.

Of course, for those who know that the symbol on Superman’s chest means “hope,” it’s possible that this is the end for Geralt. Perhaps Netflix, dealing with its own business realities in the streaming war, may want to finish The Witcher strong. They renew for two seasons, end the series satisfyingly and get to work on spinoffs. Then Cavill is free to return to DC or maybe even head over to the MCU in order to do a geek trifecta. Even if he’s not done playing Geralt with the next two seasons finished, Cavill would have plenty of time before he’d have to suit up in the Wolf’s armor again.

While he was a controversial Kal-El at first, the intervening years have helped to rehabilitate Cavill’s Superman, especially now that Tyler Hoechlin is playing a more traditional version on TV. Cavill portrayed a post-9/11 Superman in an America where refugee aliens weren’t as welcome as they were in Jerry Siegel’s and Joe Shuster’s time. Cavill, fans and probably Warner Bros. would like to put a capstone on that story with a (final?) installment that proves the haters wrong.

Cavill has moved on to The Witcher and it is certainly his priority. However, Still, nothing is impossible. Michael Keaton was Batman again in the now-canceled Batgirl film, and Tobey Maguire suited up as Spider-Man after 15 years away from the role. Cavill could still play Superman one more time  but unless there’s some flexible scheduling involved, he has to get through two more seasons as Geralt first.
