Long before Jacob Elordi played Euphoria‘s bad boy antagonist Nate Jacobs, he made traction for his role as Noah Flynn in The Kissing Booth. But while Noah is known for being the handsome, Harvard-bound lover boy to Joey King’s Elle, Elordi fought to make his character a little more rough around the edges. In an interview with GQ, he detailed “going to war” with Netflix over Noah smoking, something the streamer shot down.
“I remember saying, ‘He smokes in the book. I need to smoke. He needs to have cigarettes. He’s a bad boy,’” he told the outlet regarding Beth Reekles’ novel on which the movie was based. When Netflix put the kibosh on the direction he felt his character should take, Elordi had some choice words. “I was like, ‘This is bullshit!’ I remember going to war for it. I was like, ‘Are we lying to the fucking millions of 14-year-olds out there? This guy smokes nicotine. It says here on page four — look!’” he said. “I imagine people were just like, ‘Jesus fucking Christ. Is this guy serious?’”
Elordi certainly made up for Noah’s lack of bad boy nature when he landed a role in Euphoria just a couple of years after filming the first Kissing Booth. In order to play his character — who checks off every box of toxic, from assaults to hooking up with his ex-girlfriend’s best friend — he said he went to gyms where TikTokers trained and observed the way they interacted with the world around them. And on a more surprising note, he also watched a lot of shark documentaries. “Nate is always watching,” Elordi said in the same interview. “He’ll bump into someone in the hallway, like a shark when they test someone’s leg — and then he comes up from the deep and just fucking annihilates them.”The Kissing Booth trilogy is currently streaming on Netflix and both seasons of Euphoria are currently streaming on HBO Max.
