Every Disney fan knows the story of The Little Mermaid, but those expecting to see the same events play out in the new Disney Wish show will be pleasantly surprised. This tale is reimagined and updated to reflect more on the times of today. Ariel wants legs so that she can meet Eric, yes, but it is more about her wanting to take control of her own life in order to be happy. The love story is still there however it is not the focus of the show, which is a refreshing change. With the new The Little Mermaid film coming out soon, it can be assumed that it too follows suite and gives fans a story where Ariel takes things into her own hands, and doesn’t need to be saved. Rather, she can save herself.
In an effort to avoid spoilers we won’t go into too much detail, but this is a welcome adjustment to the classic story, while still being sure to embody what everyone loves about the original story. The cast members that are a part of The Little Mermaid on the Disney Wish do an incredible job. They can sing, dance, and act — and all bring something to the table. The massive set design and puppets help to bring the story to life, and will make the audience feel like they too are under the sea. As for the costumes? Well, they need to be applauded too.
It is clear that so much blood, sweat, and tears went into this telling of Ariel’s story, and it really delivers. It is nice to watch something and not be able to predict exactly how it is all going to play out. But of course, keeping all the fan favorite songs as a part of the show was important and makes it easy to sing and dance along in your chair. This version of The Little Mermaid might be different, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel like the same Ariel — because it does. It is impossible to say which version is better, so let’s just stick with that this one is different, and equally as amazing.
The show itself is immersive and fun. It doesn’t hesitate to welcome the audience to be a part of Ariel’s world, as actors sing and dance up and down the aisles. There will be a lot of laughter, but there are also some intense moments. Everything about the experience is heightened by the use of the video screen in the back. This adds to the set design and makes every moment feel that much more real.
