Shazam 2’s Adult Darla Actor Recalls Funny On-Set Bond With Mary Actor

As the star takes over her superhero persona, Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ adult Darla actor Meagan Good recalls her funny on-set bond with Mary actor Grace Fulton. The DC Extended Universe sequel finds Billy Batson and his foster family enjoying their new lives as a superhero team, though Billy is in the midst of an existential crisis as he finds himself uncertain about his future. When the daughters of Atlas surface and threaten to destroy the world and take back Shazam’s powers, Billy and his family must rise up to protect those that they love.

The hidden meaning behind the whistle in Prey

Zachary Levi and Asher Angel return to lead the cast of Shazam! Fury of the Gods alongside Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Ian Chen, Meagan Good, Faithe Herman, Djimon Hounsou, Grace Caroline Curry and D.J. Cotrona. The film will also mark the MCU debuts of Rachel Zegler as Anthea, Helen Mirren as Hespera and Lucy Liu as Kalypso. While most of the cast and crew are returning for the film, including director David F. Sandberg, one character is getting a bit of a twist heading into Shazam! Fury of the Gods and one actor is sharing their thoughts on the change.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant to discuss Netflix’s Day Shift, Meagan Good looked back on the production of Shazam! Fury of the Gods. When asked about working with Grace Fulton taking over Mary’s superhero form from Michelle Borth, the adult Darla actor recalled her funny on-set bond with her co-star and how it fit into their filming.

“I love both Grace and Michelle, but it was fun. It’s weird because Grace is both, in real life, I call her my little sister, but in Shazam, she’s my big sister. [Chuckles] I think she just turned 26 or 27 and I just turned 40, so on set, it was like, “This is my big sister,” and everyone’s like, “Uh huh.” I think she was like, “This is so weird.” [Laughs] But she’s wonderful and such a sweet spirit and we had a lot of fun. We’re just like two big kids in superhero costumes, we’re the only two girls with a bunch of boys and we just like to sing Wilson Phillips and that’s it.”

In the first film, the adult superhero form of Mary was played by Michelle Borth in its final act while Grace Caroline Curry, who previously worked with director David F. Sandberg on Annabelle: Creation, played the teenage incarnation of the character. Though it’s yet to be explained by the cast or Sandberg why Curry is now solely portraying the heroine, some theories have speculated that the DCEU will slightly retcon Shazam’s with the explanation that once a person becomes a legal adult, they can choose what form they want to take. Given Mary was already on her way to heading off to college in the first film, it would help explain Curry playing both her normal and super-powered incarnations.

Given Curry officially took over the superhero version of Mary for the sequel, it ultimately led to her and Good sharing more set time in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, making their unique bond a sweet story for those who fell in love with the stars in the first film. Additionally, with Good’s recent tease that the Shazam family will get more screen time in the DCEU follow-up, audiences should look forward to the superhero Darla and Mary actors getting time to shine on screen together. The long wait for the film is nearly over as Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits theaters on December 21.
