There are many reasons “Seinfeld” fans love Season 3, Episode 3 (“The Pen”). Whether it’s Elaine yelling out “Stella!” or any of the jokes revolving around the titular writing utensil, this entry is rated high on IMDb for a reason. The one episode to not feature George Costanza (Jason Alexander) and one of two episodes that doesn’t feature Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards) has Jerry Seinfeld and Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) visiting Morty and Helen Seinfeld (Barney Martin and Liz Sheridan), Jerry’s parents at their senior citizen community in sunny Florida.
In a thread on the r/Seinfeld subreddit, u/JammyJacketPotato stated how much they love this particular entry. In fact, this user even quoted Elaine’s hilarious line, “Mrs. Seinfeld, I’m begging you…..put the air conditioning on!” after she emerges from sleeping on the uncomfortable sofa with the bar. Poor Elaine was unable to stand upright and was suffering the effects of a hot house with no AC running. The response from Jerry’s parents either pertains to not knowing how to work the device or not wanting to waste the money on a new sofa. Given the comments the post received, it is safe to say plenty of fans have been in similar situations. Everyone has those family members, whether parents, grandparents, or in-laws, that are always trying to save a buck, even at the expense of comfort. Like most from the series, this episode finds a side-splitting way to illustrate the very real struggle. It’s no shock that so many fans of “Seinfeld” find the episode “The Pen” so relatable.
