Why Allison’s Powers Didn’t Stop Reginald In Umbrella Academy’s S3 Finale

Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy season 3 finale has Allison’s (Emmy Raver-Lampman) power failing to stop Reginald (Colm Feore) from programming the machine hidden in Hotel Oblivion. Though Allison is able to save her fellow Umbrellas by taking an ax to Reginald’s head, it is unclear why he is completely unaffected by the force of her command. Still, Reginald’s ambitions come to fruition, and the newly powerless Umbrellas have a tough road ahead of them as they look to face down Reginald’s empire in a likely season 4 for the superhero series.

Reginald’s Hotel Oblivion plan involves sacrificing his adopted children as batteries to power the universe resetting machine. Even though she had made a deal with Reginald to reunite her with Raymond (Yusuf Gatewood) and Claire (Coco Assad), her husband and daughter from previous timelines, Allison was not on board with killing the rest of the Hargreeves as it wasn’t part of their deal. While Reginald programs a new universe, Allison uses her power and tells him to “stop” to no effect. The Umbrellas are only freed once she kills Reginald, revealing his alien identity to her.

Allison’s powers didn’t stop Reginald in The Umbrella Academy’s season 3 finale because, despite her growing stronger and being able to rumor without saying “I heard a rumor,” she still has her limitations. Reginald could have resisted Allison’s command, or perhaps she didn’t rumor him properly. Whatever the case, Allison’s power not being foolproof puts a significant damper on an otherwise versatile ability.

Why Allison’s Powers Still Have Limitations In Umbrella Academy

Allison’s powers have grown a lot throughout the series, but she still has a ways to go, as seen in The Umbrella Academy season 2 where she is able to manipulate reality with her words. Despite Allison’s power change in season 3, her current rumoring can still be resisted, which is what Reginald could have done in the finale. The Sparrow Academy’s Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez) briefly withstood an interrogation by Allison regarding the whereabouts of the Commission briefcase the Umbrellas thought they needed to put an end to the Kugelblitz. Because Sloane doesn’t know the answer to Allison’s question, she didn’t answer until Allison exerted more pressure, proving Allison’s powers still have their limitations.

Likewise, while Reginald was programming the Hotel Oblivion machine, all Allison rumors him to do is “stop.” The vague nature of her command plays a big factor in why Reginald is able to continue resetting the universe. And Allison likely didn’t actually want Reginald to stop because even though she saved her siblings, Allison chose to activate Reginald’s universe to her happy ending with Ray and Claire.

Having gotten everything she wanted, Allison won’t be The Umbrella Academy’s next villain, as the Hargreeves have to navigate Reginald’s new world order. However, as Allison now knows Reginald’s biggest secret, it won’t be long before the rest of the Umbrellas and Sparrows find out, too. The Umbrella Academy is yet to be renewed by Netflix, but a season 4 is hotly anticipated for the ragtag superhero family.
