Dune 2’s Feyd Actor Talks Working With Denis Villeneuve On Sci-Fi Sequel

Dune: Part Two’s Feyd-Rautha actor Austin Butler opens up about working with director Denis Villeneuve on the sequel to 2021’s sci-fi epic. Previously known for his role as Tex Watson in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Butler now stars in Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic Elvis as the titular singer. A few months ago, Butler was cast in Dune: Part Two as the major villain Feyd-Rautha, who was previously portrayed by Sting in David Lynch’s 1984 Dune movie and Matt Keeslar in the 2000 miniseries Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Released last fall in theaters and on HBO Max, Villeneuve’s Dune was met with widespread acclaim from critics and audiences for its ambition, story, scope, and technical prowess. Dune was the first of a planned two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal 1965 novel, though Dune: Part Two was not officially greenlit until shortly after the first film released to positive reviews and strong box office returns. Much of Dune’s ensemble cast will return for the sequel including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. Dune: Part Two has also started casting several new roles, including Butler as Feyd-Rautha, the nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) and heir apparent to his throne.

During a recent interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar), Butler opened up about working with Villeneuve on Dune: Part Two. Though the Elvis actor wasn’t able to say much, he shared his admiration for the visionary filmmaker and his excitement for having the opportunity to work with him. Read what Butler said below:

I don’t know what I can say about this. What I can say is that I have such a huge admiration for Denis [Villineuve] and would jump at any opportunity to collaborate with him on anything. He’s such an incredible filmmaker, and brings with him so many other amazing artists. And I loved the first film. So, yeah, I’m trying to be vague. But I really love Denis a lot!

Other than Butler, newcomers on Dune: Part Two include Christopher Walken as Shaddam Corrino IV, the Emperor of the Known Universe, and Florence Pugh as his daughter, Princess Irulan. Next to the returning Baron Harkonnen, Butler’s Feyd-Rautha will be one of the sequel’s primary antagonists who is just as cruel, treacherous, and cunning as his uncle. A previous report revealed that Butler has already begun his knife training for Dune: Part Two, which is significant considering the climactic knife fight between Paul Atreides and Feyd-Rautha during the second half of the story.

Dune: Part Two has not started filming yet, as reports indicate it is eying a fall 2022 start date. Therefore, Butler isn’t able to talk about working with Villeneuve firsthand quite yet and is instead expressing his love for the director’s past work and eagerness to collaborate with him on set. Until there are more updates on Dune: Part Two, audiences can catch Butler’s performance as the legendary musician in Elvis, which has garnered a ton of critical acclaim prior to the film’s release on June 24.
