The end of Young Justice Phantoms sees the HBO Max series reuse Alphas most elusive team maneuvers not once but twice to great effect.
Miss Martian faked the death of her team in Young Justice Phantoms The following contains spoilers for Young Justice Phantoms Final Death and Rebirth which is now airing on HBO Max. Young Justice has seen Nightwing students implement various tactics to help the Justice League keep the world safe. Aqualad Miss Martian Superboy and Wally West/Kid Flash were so strong that they could easily join the league. But Dick Graysons team takes pride in their brains not just their muscles.
His most deceptive strategy is also his most cunning fake death. Young Justice fans will remember how Artemis assassinated her to enter the light as a tigress. It was effective but many of her colleagues hated the deception because they really believed she was dead. At the end of Young Justice Phantoms the Alpha team reused this strategy and once again proved how useful it is.
Nightwing faked his own death in Young Justice Phantoms. The gimmick was used twice in Death and Rebirth and it played a major role in saving the planet from the Zods. The first case concerns Nightwing who appeared to be dead in the previous episode. Laure Zod beat Dick to make sure his parents were bankrupt with their ability to conquer Earth. He smashed a dick into the ice of the Castle of Solitude and apparently crushed him.
However Dick used a hidden blade to cut off his head probably a fan of professional wrestling. He also stopped his heartbeat by slowing it down and successfully tricked Lores supernatural hearing. He learned the latter from Batman who did the same in Frank Millers classic The Dark Knight Returns. In this case Bruce used a pill to make Superman think his heart had stopped but Dick did so naturally in the episode.
Young Justice Outsiders Miss Martian leads the team When Nightwing ran to find the destroyed Bioship and all of his teammates in the snow it was the second time the Alpha Team used the fake death idea. Miss Martin had created a mental illusion which she dropped when she saw Nightwing. She admitted that Saturn Girl psychologically figured out that Ursa was going to attack with the new Emerald Empress powers so she and the Phantom Girl protected them with this facade.
Their apparent deaths allowed everyone time to recuperate as heroes bet on the Zods tendency to leave corpses lying around assuming their opponents died rather than finish the job. This critical oversight of the Alpha Team made it easy to use this sleight of hand to regroup and eventually stop the bad guys in the Metropolis. While Young Justice is now in its fourth season this plot point was an indication that some of the old strategies are as good as the new ones. All 26 episodes of Young Justice Phantoms as well as the previous three seasons of Young Justice are available on HBO Max.
