Why Jurassic World: Dominion didn’t revisit two major characters

Jurassic World: Dominion might have brought back the original Jurassic Park trio of Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum – but not everyone from the first movie was able to return for the franchise’s conclusion. Despite the return of Drs Ian Malcolm, Ellie Sattler and Alan Grant, two familiar faces from the original movie and The Lost World were notably absent: Lex and Tim Murphy.

Lex and Tim – played by Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello, respectively – appeared in the classic titles as John Hammond’s grandchildren, and while a throwback might have been nice, director Colin Trevorrow has explained why he decided it against it.While reflecting on BD Wong’s continued appearance in the Jurassic World trilogy as Dr Henry Wu, Trevorrow admitted to The Hollywood Reporter that the number of cameos for Dominion had ultimately reached a limit.

“Every one of these characters takes up so much oxygen in every room they step into that we really needed to be careful and thoughtful,” he replied, when asked about Lex and Tim’s absence. “I’ve always tried to keep a good sense of when it would start to feel like a Love Boat episode or something. Where it’s just like, ‘Who’s the special guest in this scene?’ And we have five characters from Jurassic Park.”
