Bill Anderson Shares Hilarious Story About Johnny Cash Collaboration That Didnt Quite Happen

Bill Anderson worked on one of his most beloved hits with iconic partner Johnny Cash but in a new interview the Country Music Hall of Famer reveals his attempted collaboration never came to fruition. Po Folks is one of Andersons signature hits and he tells Taste of Country that when he first came up with the idea for the song and began the writing process Cash fell in love with the workinprogress.

I had written the first verse Theres a lot of people looking down on me/Because I dont come from a rich family and so on recalls Anderson. I was in California early I guess it was 196 or 1961 when I wrote that. Johnny Cash was living in California at the time and I took it to him and he was fascinated by it. And we started trying to write… I wanted to write a song and call it OneMule Farmer he laughs. We played with it and tried to write it and we never got it to fit says Anderson. And then I came back to Nashville and one day I was playing around with it and the line We were nothing except for friends just came up. The song not only became one of Andersons biggest hits but also helped launch a nationwide restaurant chain in the 8s.

Po Folks is just one of the classic Bill Anderson songs featured in his new hits collection As Far As I Can See The Best Of. The project also includes City Lights Still The Tip of My Fingers Sometimes and more. The project also features a rare and neverbeforeheard demo of If It Is All the Same to You. which Anderson recorded with thennewcomer Dolly Parton in 1964 and eventually released as a duet with Jan Howard on her album of the same title in 1969. Andersons new album also features an allnew collaboration with Parton titled Someday Itll All Make Sense.
