Why Harry Potters Future Wont Be Hurt By Fantastic Beasts Failures

Fantastic Beasts has unfortunately encountered commercial and critical problems of late. Yet these failures wont affect the future of Harry Potter. The Fantastic Beasts franchise began in 2016 as a spinoff of Harry Potter to unfortunately middling response since yet the failures of the former wont affect the latters future in the world of film and TV. The first film in the prequel series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the bestperforming film both commercially and critically.

However since then the franchise has encountered some turbulence being met with more criticism and diminishing returns at the box office. On the other hand Harry Potter remains one of the more popular franchises in modern cinema. The wizarding world in film began in 2001 with the release of the Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone movie. This film spawned seven sequels ending with the twopart Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. However with the failures of its spinoff series speculation began on whether the Harry Potter franchise would be negatively affected.

It wouldnt be the first time that a wider franchise has been affected by the release of a spinoff/prequel series. For example the release of the Star Wars prequel trilogy and its subsequent reception led to the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney in order to revive the franchise. However given the continued pull of the Star Wars franchise in recent years it remains the case that Harry Potter shouldnt be affected by the failures of Fantastic Beasts.

What Went Wrong With Fantastic Beasts Movies

It is worth exploring when looking at the future of the wizarding world franchise what went wrong with the Fantastic Beasts series. Despite the first films positive response its two sequels Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore have been met with a continually poorer critical and commercial response. The main reason for this is simply a lack of focus on a central story. The Harry Potter series was based on the series of books written by J.K Rowling adapted after the books were written. This allowed both Rowling and the filmmakers to take their time constructing the stories of the series.

However the difference with Fantastic Beasts is that J.K Rowling began writing the film series for the screen without being based on previously created works. Not only was this a new medium for Rowling but the lack of a focused completed story for Warner Bros. to base the Fantastic Beasts movies on has led to several issues. One of these issues is the series unnecessary length. Initially the Fantastic Beasts series was planned as a trilogy before being extended to five films.

The middling reception to the second and third installments however has illuminated the flaws with extending beyond a trilogy. A lot of aspects of both The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts 3 were criticized for being inconsequential with low stakes and seemingly filling up the runtimes of each film in order to warrant five films being made. If three Fantastic Beasts movies had been the plan from the beginning and Warner Bros. allowed more time to further flesh out the story of the prequels rather than having a vague outline of plot points and needing to fill the spaces between the Fantastic Beasts series may have been met with the same success both critically and commercially of the Harry Potter franchise.

Fantastic Beasts 4 Is Unlikely To Happen Now

Because of all of this it is now highly unlikely that there will be another Fantastic Beasts movie. Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore released in April 2022. However two months before this director David Yates revealed that work on the fourth films script had not yet begun. Upon the release of Fantastic Beasts 3 it was reported that Warner Bros. greenlighting the final two installments of the series relied entirely on The Secrets of Dumbledore and its critical and commercial performance. It is safe to assume then that Fantastic Beasts 4 is extremely unlikely to be made.

The film unfortunately underperformed at the box office largely contributing to why a sequel is still yet to be greenlit. The film opened to $40 million domestically marking the lowest openingweekend total of the wizarding world franchise. The box office run for The Secrets of Dumbledore earned just over $400 million worldwide the lowestgrossing film in the franchise. Given the $200 million budget of the film it is unlikely that Warner Bros. turned a profit due to marketing costs and delays caused by COVID.

In terms of critical response the film received slightly better reviews than The Crimes of Grindelwald. However Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore is still the secondworst reviewed wizarding world movie ahead of only its predecessor. This reception combined with the poor box office returns are the reasons why Fantastic Beasts 4 is unlikely to happen given Warner Bros. reliance on the reception of the third film being critical to the greenlighting of the fourth film.
