With the live-action The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey, set to be released in 2023, and many more live-action Disney adaptions continually being released over the last decade, Disney fanatics are eager to see what they’ll do with this classic. The animated The Little Mermaid, released in 1989, is still one of the most beloved Disney films to date. While it has a lot of fans, the film also has some viewers that found some issues with the film. Some Reddit fans shared their unpopular opinions about this cherished Disney Princess story.
It’s Better Than Beauty And The Beast
Beauty and the Beast is considered one of the best Disney princesses movies ever. However, some Reddit users think The Little Mermaid takes the lead. Reddit user weezleifyoupleezle said, “I don’t even know why Beauty and the Beast was nominated for a Golden Globe back in the day, and “The little mermaid” wasn’t? The songs in B&B are worse, the characters are obnoxious, and the romance is honestly… kinda gross.”
While everyone has their own taste when it comes to Disney films, Beauty and the Beast is widely considered one of the best of their films of all time. The Little Mermaid is a classic favorite, but it has yet to surpass this other classic.
Triton Didn’t Respect Ariel
While many fans love Ariel’s father, there are some fans that think he was a below-par father and didn’t try hard enough to communicate with her. Reddit user FuturologyDiscussion said, “it’s totally on Triton for making his kid feel like she couldn’t talk to him.” However, most people take into consideration that Triton had a lot of responsibility outside of his children, which was difficult as a single parent, and Ariel was a strong-willed, rebellious teenager. One lesson The Little Mermaid teaches the audience is that open communication and listening can do a lot of good.
