Star Trek’s Kate Mulgrew Hints She’s Open to Live-Action Janeway Return

Star Trek: Voyager star Kate Mulgrew has hinted that she is open to the possible live-action return of her iconic Star Trek character, USS Voyager Captain Kathryn Janeway. Voyager was the fifth television series in the Star Trek franchise, running until season 7 from 1995 to 2001. Voyager made Star Trek history as the first show in the franchise to feature a female captain, and Mulgrew’s Janeway has been beloved by audiences for decades.

Over the past several years, there has been a resurgence of Star Trek content. After Star Trek: Discovery premiered in 2017, it was quickly followed by Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds. While many of these act as prequels to the original Star Trek series, Picard is unique in that it follows The Next Generation’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) 30 years after the end of the series. In the recent Picard season 2, Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) made reference to Janeway, leading some viewers to speculate that this could hint at Mulgrew’s return to the character in live-action in the near future — potentially in Picard season 3 alongside returning Next Generation characters.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Mulgrew said that while Captain Janeway is not likely to turn up in Picard season 3, she is open to returning to the character in live-action. With the resurgence of Star Trek projects over the past five years, Mulgrew says that she is looking at returning to the franchise with “new eyes,” and that she is curious about what would happen if Janeway returned to the screen. Read Mulgrew’s full comment below:

“Well, I think Picard is done, unless I’m quite mistaken. I think they’ve finished, but it’s not likely that Janeway will show up on Picard. But who knows what will happen to her in the future? There seems to be, as I said to you earlier, a tremendous resurgence here, a rather vital one. So for the first time, I’m actually looking at it with new eyes. I wonder what would happen if Janeway were to come back to live-action. There are many more surprises in store, so I have to be careful. She is an admiral, but she is capable of surprising even herself, and what is coming will be entirely unexpected and will then turn into something pretty wonderful, taking this into an altogether new season for Janeway in her several incarnations.”

Captain Janeway in Star Trek Voyager and Prodigy
This past year, Mulgrew appeared in the animated Star Trek series Prodigy, in which she voiced both Janeway and a hologram version of the iconic captain. In the past, it seemed that Mulgrew was happy to leave Janeway where Voyager left her, but with the recent rise in popularity of Star Trek and the continued exploration of much-beloved classic characters like Jean-Luc Picard, Mulgrew has perhaps changed her mind. Indeed, the actor’s comments that something “entirely unexpected” is coming in Janeway’s story hints that Mulgrew is aware of a new and fascinating arc for the USS Voyager Captain, teasing an exciting future for the character whether it is in or out of the animated realm. However, her comments suggests that a Janeway cameo shouldn’t be expected in Picard season 3.

Though the new Star Trek series have enjoyed different levels of success, the sheer amount of projects running concurrently is, as Mulgrew points out, a testament to the franchise’s renewed popularity. With the Star Trek 4 film still in production limbo, viewers are able to turn to the small screen for their Star Trek fix. Next Generation actress Marina Sirtis recently said Picard season 3 was an opportunity to give some classic Star Trek characters a proper send-off, and perhaps the Voyager characters are next in line for the same treatment. There is every possibility that audiences may be seeing some beloved Star Trek: Voyager characters getting a reprisal of their own — including Mulgrew’s Janeway.
